Why your website shouldn't hold you hostage – a Squarespace designer's perspective
A conversation with a friend left me utterly flabbergasted. She recounted how the agency responsible for constructing her company's website had left them in a predicament – they couldn't update the site themselves! 🤯
In her role within the marketing team of a prominent household name, my friend managed their charity grant programme. The website served as a crucial portal for receiving applications from charities and non-profits. Yet, she and her team found themselves powerless to make even the simplest of text edits ahead of the application process opening. Zilch. Nada.
It was frustrating beyond measure.
To add salt to the wound, the web design agency was already pocketing a hefty monthly sum for retained support. But to our shock and disbelief, this package didn't cover basic text changes. Say what now? And all this, following a six-figure sum spent on building the site.
You can imagine my horror.
It seemed incredulous to me that a renowned UK brand with a substantial budget could fall victim to what appeared to be daylight robbery.
Sure, the site was likely bespoke coded, but why wasn't it constructed with the capability for in-house editing post-launch? Or better yet, why wasn't the retained agreement inclusive of a reasonable number of edits per month?
While I must acknowledge that I'm not privy to the full details of the situation, it certainly sounded like an unscrupulous agency taking advantage of businesses unfamiliar with the intricacies of web design and technology. They exploited this vulnerability to rake in some rather questionable profits.
This is precisely why I place such a high premium on crafting websites that are effortlessly manageable for my non-techy clients.
My approach?
I build exclusively on Squarespace. Not only does this ensure that their websites are continuously backed up and shielded from potential hackers, but it also eliminates the need for ongoing technical maintenance or retainers.
Moreover, I offer personalised 1:1 training sessions for each of my clients, ensuring they feel confident navigating their new digital domain. With 30 days of post-launch email support included, I want to make sure they're equipped with all the tools and resources needed to take charge of their online presence. And should they need assistance beyond that, my doors are always open.
For me, it's about more than just web design. It's about empowering my clients, giving them not just a website, but a valuable asset they control – an indispensable tool in their marketing and sales toolkit.
