How to fall back in love with your website

Dear fellow business owner,

You've been running a successful business for a while now and things are going well. But lately, you can't shake off the feeling that you’ve become completely disconnected from your website.

You don’t want to work on it. You don’t even want to look at it. The thought of sharing it with your ideal clients makes you cringe. You know it needs work but you’re not sure where to start.

Trust me, I’ve been there.

It’s easy for our digital presence to start feeling stale, especially when we’re focused on the day-to-day of running a business. But the good news is, you can reconnect with your website and make it something you’re proud to share again.

Here’s how…

1. Reflect on your journey

Your business has evolved and your website should reflect that. Take a moment to reconnect with why you started doing what you do in the first place. What drives you? What do you want your audience to feel when they land on your site?

One client I worked with felt completely disconnected from her website. She told me, “It wasn’t something I really wanted to share or work on. And now I feel excited and proud to share it because it truly feels like me.” When we aligned her website with her mission, services and personality, everything changed – she finally saw her website as a true extension of herself, her offerings and how she could help more people.

To reconnect with your business, you might find it helpful – just as I did – to write a manifesto or a set of guiding beliefs. I was supported in writing mine by Sonja Nisson, who, along with Sharon Tanton, wrote the brilliant book Valuable Content. 2. Update your content

When was the last time you refreshed your copy? As your business grows, your messaging needs to evolve too. Go through your website and ask:

  • Does my About page truly reflect who I am and what I do now?

  • Are my services described in a way that speaks to my ideal clients?

  • Does my homepage instantly communicate what I offer and who I help?

Small tweaks in wording and structure can make a big difference in how your website connects with visitors. Not sure what changes to make? Don’t be afraid to ask your ideal or past clients if the messaging resonates with them.

You could also look through testimonials and pull out keywords or phrases they have used and sprinkle these throughout your own copy. For example, one of my clients described her new business website as the place where she was now doing her “soul work”. I thought this was a beautiful phrase and way to describe my ideal client, so I started peppering this throughout my website and content.

3. Review the user experience

It’s easy to get caught up in how a website looks, but how it works is just as important. Put yourself in your visitor’s shoes and ask:

  • Is my site easy to navigate?

  • Can people quickly find the information they need?

  • Does my site feel welcoming and aligned with my brand?

Making small adjustments to the layout, buttons and overall flow of your site can dramatically improve engagement, usability and sales. Perhaps there aren’t enough calls to action, making it harder for people to get in touch. Something that Denise Duffield-Thomas – a money mindset coach – said that has stayed with me is to make it easy for people to give you money. Let’s make it as easy as possible for people to work with you :)

4. Refresh the design

Your website should visually represent the energy and personality of your business. Sometimes, all it takes is a few design tweaks to make everything feel more you again. Updated images for sometimes a new font can liven things up.

One of my past projects involved working with a life coach and meditation instructor who’s website didn’t match her beautiful energy and offerings. I had first-hand experience of this as I knew her personally through a membership we were both in. She booked in for a Website Support Day and we made several design changes. One of which brought in nature-inspired textures – crystals, leaves and stone – adding depth and visual interest to her offerings. These textures were drawn directly from objects she displayed at a recent retreat, creating a tangible connection between her brand and the real-world experiences she creates for her clients. The result? A website she was proud to share, one that truly reflected her passion and work.

5. Seek professional support
