Bringing your vision to life: How we collaborate to create your perfect website
Many of my clients worry that they won’t be able to articulate the vision for their business and website.
Please don’t worry!
As a web designer, it’s my job to understand and help you article your ideas and vision for your new website. We’ll work together closely throughout the project to ensure we create a site that truly reflects your brand identity, communicates your personality and passion for what you do, and showcases your services in the best way possible – all in line with your business goals and vision for the future.
Here are some ways I work with clients throughout a website build project that help me to grasp and capture their ideas and concepts:
Strategy call to define the brief
We kick off the project with a strategy call to get to know your business, learn more about what you do and understand your direction. This enables us to define a detailed brief, covering:
Purpose and goals – the objectives for your website to clarify the primary focus for the design
Target audience – your ideal visitors and their needs so I can tailor the design to appeal to them
Content outline – a comprehensive outline of all the pages you plan to include, such as blog posts or a portfolio, which will inform the website sitemap, navigation and hierarchical structure
Functional requirements – specify essential features like contact forms or booking systems
Inspiration and content gathering stage for visual direction
You’ll provide me with the following information:
Brand identity – your brand’s colour scheme, logos, fonts and any existing design guidelines to ensure consistency with your brand identity
Content – all text, images and media files that are to be added to your website. Knowing the content helps me design more effectively.
I will ask you to provide URLs of websites you admire, explaining why you like them and highlighting specific features or styles you may want to incorporate. It’s also good to see examples of what you don’t like, explaining why, to help avoid elements that don’t fit your vision.
I may also invite you to use platforms like Pinterest to gather images, colour palettes, typography and design elements that inspire you.
Initial designs, sketches and wireframes
Before your website is fully built out in Squarespace, I use Figma to create design concepts for the homepage and sometimes other pages or sections, depending on the project. This enables us to ensure we’re aligned before I move full steam ahead with the website build.
You’ll be able to see the initial design, structure and flow of a page and give your feedback, allowing me to refine the design before fully building out your site.
Communication is everything
Due to my previous 16 year marketing and communications career, I know that regular communication is key to a successful project – website or otherwise! That’s why I provide frequent updates throughout our time working together.
A project timeline with clear milestones and deadlines for each phase helps keep us on track and ensures timely delivery.
Please know that website design is an iterative process and we may need a few rounds of revisions to get everything just right.
